In addition to the facilitated panel and discussion at the South Halsted Community Open House on November 15, participants interacted with the planning team (FSCDC, Teska Associates, Inc. and Rudd Resources) around several station areas spread around the room.
Stations were organized around the following themes:
- Getting Around (Transportation)
- Businesses & Jobs
- Housing
- Public Art & Culture
Read on for key insights from each interactive station. Missed the Open House and want a brief summary of findings? Check out this post to get filled in.
Getting Around
- Make sure Major Taylor Trail is safe! Well lit, no hiding spots. Trailhead is good idea for people to come to use the Trail.
- Need ample parking along Halsted. Need ADA spots too. Dedicated parking at parks would be greatly appreciated.
- How will 107th/Halsted be connected to the Red Line Extension? That’s a big gap from 103rd to 111th stations.
- Speeding and safety is a concern on Halsted. Ticketing residents is very burdening, can more education be provided (rules of road and why important)? Can there be speed humps on side streets to slow traffic?
- More trash cans are needed along Halsted.
- Visitors to the Pace booth expressed support and interest for the planned Pace Pulse that will be on Halsted
Businesses & Jobs
- Groceries, coffee shops and sit down restaurants were the top choices to bring to the neighborhood.
- You should be able to get what you need without leaving the neighborhood

Housing
- Need veteran housing in the area
- Rehab current vacant homes
- Reentry housing is needed
- Support for all types of housing – residents voted for single-family homes, mixed-use, multi-family homes, townhomes and age-targeted housing
Public Art & Culture
- Add a public art walk using existing buildings
- Need more weekly events for kids and families at the new Jackie Robinson Park
- POP! Heights Park can be a destination
- Add a veterans memorial along Major Taylor Trail
Plan It!
Residents also had their shot at planning new development and rehab of buildings around key areas.
The vision for the area around West Pullman Metra Station was to create a neighborhood center around the station and Halsted St. It would have different types of housing from townhomes to small apartment buildings to senior housing – nothing too tall, but enough to create a sense of neighborhood in a walkable area. They wanted better access to the Major Taylor Trail and new parkland along the trail.
The vision for S. Halsted between 99th and 103rd was to reoccupy vacant land with retail, restaurants and mixed-use (retail +housing) to create a continuous environment along the two streets.

Next Steps
Input will continue to be collected through the project’s website, www.southhalsedcorridorplan.org
Based on the full range of both in-person and virtual input, a draft plan will be developed and shared for public comment in late Winter / early Spring 2026.
